The Rockbridge Report has been named the best independent online student publication in the Society of Professional Journalists' Region II Mark of Excellence awards.

The award was announced Saturday at an SPJ regional conference in Lexington. Region II includes Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The first-place finish in the category at the regional level qualifies The Rockbridge Report's Web site for the SPJ national competition in Atlanta in September.

The regional conference at Washington and Lee University featured workshops for journalists and a keynote address by Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!
